William Tsiaras, MA, M.D., is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University in Providence, R.I., where he has had a private practice in Ophthalmology since 1981. Dr. Tsiaras is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology, having completed both residencies at the University of Pennsylvania. He additionally served as Chief Resident in Ophthalmology and completed a fellowship in Medical Retina at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Tsiaras joined the faculty of the Brown Medical School in 1981 and became the Chairman of the Ophthalmology Department in 1988. He held that position from 1988 through 2010. He has received numerous teaching and professional awards including, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award from Brown University. He has been selected to “Best Doctors in America” on several occasions during his career. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and book chapters and has given numerous invited lectures throughout the country. He was the editor of the General Internal Medicine section of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Basic and Clinical Science Series for 10 years. He has also been a presenter at several TEDMED conferences and other national and international conferences speaking on vision related topics. Dr. Tsiaras’ primary professional life has been dedicated to the Department of Ophthalmology at Brown University and to resident education. His nonprofessional life has been dedicated to his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoys cycling, hiking and painting.
